The pop category is the shortest, mainly because it’s the hardest to distinguish.
Modern Pop is mixed with so many different influences. It’s hard to look at the songs released during any given year and be able to pick out a song that’s purely pop. Even traditional “pop” artists, lean towards another genre for influence.
The pop categories are traditionally for vocal performances and albums, rather than song recognition like the R&B, Rap, and Country categories.
All of these nominations caused a shaking of my head to occur. Few made sense, some seemed lazy, and I think some were just made for extra entertainment.
Best Pop Solo Performance
Should Win: When I Was Your Man – Bruno Mars
Will Win: When I Was Your Man – Bruno Mars
LOL: Roar – Katy Perry/ Brave – Sara Barielles
Should’ve Been Nominated: Honeymoon Avenue – Ariana Grande
[Bruno, you showed your talent here more than ever]
[I don’t even know if ‘Honeymoon Avenue’ was submitted by the record label for a nomination, but it should’ve been. If you haven’t driven on the avenue yet, (LOL-FUNNY JOKE) then I’m begging you too. It’s the song that proved she was more that a Nickelodeon star, and her voice is less-Mariah-like here and more Ariana]
Best Pop Duo/Group Performance
Should Win: Stay – Rihanna feat. Mikky Ekko
Will Win: Suit and Tie – Justin Timberlake feat. Jay-Z
LOL: Just Give Me A Reason – Pink feat. Nate Ruess
Should’ve Been Nominated: #Beautiful – Mariah Carey feat. Miguel
[That last one is just for Miguel, fyi]
[Justin will pull this one off because he was snubbed in all of the major categories. He’s also highly respected by voters, so he’ll see some love in the pop categories. I also don’t see 20/20 winning, so this may be it for him]
[Rihanna and Mikky sound beautiful, and I would argue that it’s the vocal performance of her career. This is a tight category and in the end I don’t see them pulling through]
ONE MORE TIME:
Best Pop Vocal Album
Should Win: Pure Heroine – Lorde
Will Win: Unorthodox Jukebox – Bruno Mars
LOL: Blurred Lines – Robin Thicke
Should’ve Been Nominated: Yours Truly – Ariana Grande
[Oh, excuse me. I didn’t realize that releasing one hit song and filling the rest of your album with filler qualifies for a best album nomination Robin. In all seriousness, the album was made just to cash in on the success of ‘Blurred Lines’. Waste of a nomination here. It should have gone to Ariana for not only doing her best Mariah Carey impression, but for completely surprising everyone with a debut album of substance.]
