Grammy Week: Rap Categories

The 38th Annual GRAMMY Awards - Press Room

The last few years have brought a renaissance for Rap with the Grammy voters.

Rappers are now crossing into the major categories, and have been for the last few years . 2014 was a big year for Rap, especially since two rap albums are nominated for album of the year.

At the end of the day, if you’re into underground rap and the mixtapes, you’ll hate the Grammys. The Grammys only look at popular rap, so go into the show with that mindset.

I’m not ashamed to like popular rap and I actually prefer it.

My predictions below:

Best Rap Performance

Should Win: Swimming Pools (Drank) – Kendrick Lamar

Will Win: Swimming Pools (Drank) – Kendrick Lamar

LOL: Berzerk – Eminem

Should’ve Been Nominated: Crooked Smile – J. Cole

[Kendrick came out of the gate swinging with this. His vocal inflections and charisma allowed him to break through the market on first listen. His lyrics made us stay.

Best Rap/Sung Collaboration

Should Win: Power Trip – J.Cole feat. Miguel

Will Win: Holy Grail – Jay. Z feat. Justin Timberlake

LOL: Remember You – Wiz Khalifa feat. The Weeknd

Should’ve Been Nominated: Bad – Wale feat. Tianna Thomas

Best Rap Song

Should Win: New Slaves – Kanye West

Will Win: New Slaves – Kanye West

LOL: F**king Problems – ASAP Rocky feat. 2 Chainz, Drake, and Kendrick Lamar

[I mean, the title alone proves what an LOL that is. Thanks for the laugh]

Should’ve Been Nominated: Power Trip – J.Cole feat. Miguel

Best Rap Album

[Out of every category this year, this is by far the hardest to choose. Why did you do this to me?]

Here are my thoughts going into this category:

– Jay-Z said this was one of his worst albums and I believe him

– The Heist was the white rap album of the year

– *Started*

-Still laughing at the ‘F**king Problems’ nomination

-Drake and Kendrick were in that together, now they hate each other

-Who is the king of New York?

-Kendrick *Drank* Drake *Drank* Ye *Drank*

Should Win: Nothing was the Same – Drake

Will Win: Good Kid, M.A.A.D. City – Kendrick Lamar

LOL: Magna Carter…Holy Grail

Should’ve Been Nominated: Born Sinner – J.Cole

[J.Cole’s snub here was the worst out of all the nominations. It was a critic and fan favorite. Jay should be out and Cole should be in. Funny how the mentee and and triumph the mentor}
