It’s no secret that I’m obsessed with a good soul train line.
Name a better way to get a bunch of people out on the floor and force them to kill it. I use kill it very loosely because the display of dance at my wedding’s soul train line was….special.
But that’s the fun of it. If you slay great, if you don’t you’ll survive. The minute you get to the top of the line and look at your partner in the eyes there’s an immediate connection. You trust them. They trust you. No matter what you’re working together, with ease or struggle, to get to the end of the line.
It’s a shame that it’s a dying art form. My sole purpose of
this blog this post is to bring back America’s baby. Bring back the original open space of creativity. Bring us back to the phunk.
Here’s a few songs that you can get real funky to from the last few years. Plus, a fool proof classic.
Together we shall resurrect the soul train.
‘Treasure’ – Bruno Mars
Alright guys, there is no better beat to keep up that two step while you’re waiting in line. If you’re lucky enough, you’ll be at the front of the line at the end of the chorus. When Bruno hits you with the “oh-oh-oh” this is the time for a spin. If you’re really daring a split. Follow your heart.
‘Suit and Tie’ – Justin Timberlake feat. Jay-Z
Skip the beginning. The song really picks up in the first verse. If you’re wearing a suit and tie please use them to your advantage. HOW COULD YOU NOT BE OPENING YOUR SUIT JACKET TO THIS? Bonus points if you’re able to succeed during the Jay-Z rap. Add a little slow motion douggie. Not too much though. Respect the train.
‘Gust of Wind’ – Pharrell
Taken right from Pharrell’s G I R L [Read my review here], the song was made for a little boogie. A good shimmy of the shoulders will go a long way. Try to slide your way down the line in perfect unison with your partner. Look at them dead in the eyes at the top of the line, they’ll know what to do.
‘I Can’t Describe (The Way I Feel)’ – Jennifer Hudson
This is ideal for a mid-soul train song. It gives you a steady beat to catch your breath. If you have the chorus, there’s a nice 808 drum to step to. If you haven’t checked the song out yet, you should asap.
‘Fine China’ – Chris Brown
I really don’t like this man, BUT IS THIS A JAM OR WHAT? This is what it’s all about. ‘Fine China’ is not only the best Chris Brown song, but it brings us right back to the days of the King, Michael Jackson. This calls for a lot of slides as well, but if you watch the music video you know what you’re up against. Please do your homework.
‘Green Light’ – Beyonce
Your whole life has lead up to you being at the top of the line when the “Go!” section of the song starts. Take a deep breath. Tell yourself, “The Phunk is in me.” And go.
And if all else fails, it’s time to call the King in and show the basics what it’s all about with
‘Don’t Stop Till You Get Enough’ – Michael Jackson
What would you soul train to?
And if you’re gonna try to tell me a Pitbull song, please leave.
