It has taken a few years, but it’s finally safe to say that Iggy Azalea has indeed made it in the US.
The Australian rapper’s debut album, The New Classic, was released on Tuesday and shot to the top of the US iTunes chart. For a rapper that’s just getting some real shine here in the states, this is a huge accomplishment, especially after a rocky 2013.
Last year brought a series of highs and lows for Iggy, but none bigger than the push back of her major label debut. A pushback is never a good sign, especially when it’s for a debut. The chances that a label will continue to pump resources into an artist that is not sticking with the public is slim.
After the criminally underrated ‘Work’ failed to impact the US things looked grim. I assumed that Iggy would float around the internet sensation zone and never graduate to full blown star.
But thanks to ‘Fancy’ I was completely wrong.
If you take a quick glance at iTunes ‘Fancy’ is riding high at number 5 at the moment. If you really keep up with iTunes you would’ve noticed that it’s one of the only songs that showing movement in the top 10 this week. With the rapid movement of the past few days the song will easily hit the Billboard top 10 in the next two weeks.
We’re in a weird spot for female rap. Nicki Minaj is honestly the only true force in the industry right now, which is why ‘Fancy’ is so important. Not only would it be a huge turn in Iggy’s track record, but it would automatically make her a contender for the crown. She would be treading Nicki waters, something none of the other female rappers have come close to doing.
Sorry Angel Haze and Azealia Banks.
I mean, Iggy was on Good Morning America yesterday. If that’s not screaming mainstream, I don’t know what is.
By no means am I suggesting a Iggy/Nicki feud because no one has time for that. I’m not saying one is better than the other either. But Iggy is contending for the female rap crown and she’s doing it the right way.
The New Classic isn’t a classic to be honest, but I don’t think it needs to be. It’s going to set Iggy up for the future, and at this point it’s all about getting that second hit. Iggy’s already said that the next single is going to be ‘Black Widow’. I don’t think Rita Ora’s feature will draw the names, but the song was written by Katy Perry so maybe her songwriting
black magic will rub off.
I don’t think people will remember the album a few years down the line, but if Iggy continues to play her cards right and promote the album the way she has, she’ll still be around.
