Songs For A Modern Day Soul Train

scene4

It’s no secret that I’m obsessed with a good soul train line.

Name a better way to get a bunch of people out on the floor and force them to kill it. I use kill it very loosely because the display of dance at my wedding’s soul train line was….special.

But that’s the fun of it. If you slay great, if you don’t you’ll survive. The minute you get to the top of the line and look at your partner in the eyes there’s an immediate connection. You trust them. They trust you. No matter what you’re working together, with ease or struggle, to get to the end of the line.

It’s a shame that it’s a dying art form. My sole purpose of this blog this post is to bring back America’s baby. Bring back the original open space of creativity. Bring us back to the phunk.

Here’s a few songs that you can get real funky to from the last few years. Plus, a fool proof classic.

Together we shall resurrect the soul train.

King Bruno Slays Halftime, Breaks Records, Does Split, Etc.

Let’s keep it real.

The Super Bowl was a bust yesterday.

It was one of the most boring games I’ve ever seen. Broncos didn’t stand a chance. We all knew the Seahawks were going to win 40 minutes in and nothing was done to change that. No suspense, no thrill.

The Bronco’s had a rough day, but Bruno Mars did not.

Let’s take it back (take it back) to last September when Bruno was announced as the halftime show performer.

Calling me skeptical was an understatement. I was disappointed and confused. Bruno had always been an amazing performer, but I wasn’t sold on him carrying the halftime show. We had just seen Beyonce reunite Destiny Child and own the stage. How could he compete with that?

But last night proved that I should’ve never knocked Bruno down.

What Bruno Should (And Shouldn’t) Do At The Halftime Show

Bruno-Mars-2013-Bold-Sugar-VMAs

Here’s the thing, playing the Superbowl Halftime Show is one of the biggest honors an artist can receive.

 Think about it.

It only happens once a year and lately only one artist has headlined the show. If they’re nice, the artist will ask others to join, but that doesn’t take away from the fact that they are headlining.

Last year Beyonce had 100 million viewers for her show. It was the top moment of her career.

Bruno is being given an unbelievable opportunity tonight young into his career.

I’m still a little shocked he was picked (more on that when I review the show tomorrow), so it’s essential that he doesn’t mess this up.

Here’s how he can avoid that:

Grammy Week: Album of the Year

130207154149-grammy-awards-adele-story-top

This year had a lot of bogus albums.

Nothing slayed me the way I wanted. No comeback dominated everything – except for Beyonce but that album is not eligible for this years Grammys. Everything else just felt safe.

There were a few highlights. Kendrick had one of the most refreshing rap albums in years, and believe it or not, I thought Bruno did a great job of mixing eras on his album.

Album of the Year is the award that means everything – hence Kanye West’s obsession with winning one.

In an era where more time is focused on the single, rather than the album, this award is even more coveted. It’s a pat on the back that you did the right thing as an artist and created a collective work worth listening too.

Grammy Week: Pop Categories

1999_grammys_01

The pop category is the shortest, mainly because it’s the hardest to distinguish.

Modern Pop is mixed with so many different influences. It’s hard to look at the songs released during any given year and be able to pick out a song that’s purely pop. Even traditional “pop” artists, lean towards another genre for influence.

The pop categories are traditionally for vocal performances and albums, rather than song recognition like the R&B, Rap, and Country categories.

All of these nominations caused a shaking of my head to occur. Few made sense, some seemed lazy, and I think some were just made for extra entertainment.
